A journey into synthetic sound !!!
Although i was born in Yorkshire, i spent my mid-teens at a comprehensive school in the South of England. The schools one great claim to fame (and it's a stretch) was that two members from the pioneers of synth-pop "Tubeway Army" had previously been there. Arguably, they really brought this genre into the public eye with their massive hit "Are Friends Electric?", which kicks off this very compilation.
I remember many of the music magazines of the time proclaiming "rock is dead" or "the end of the guitar" in this period as the charts became full of synth driven bands. Well of course, rock wasn't dead but it's fair to say that the synth was here to stay and although the flame doesn't burn quite as bright as it once did, there is a whole new wave of bands enjoying success in the keyboard world; the killers, the knife, La Roux, MGMT, just to name a few.
For now, i will stick with the nostalga of "When Synthesizers Ruled The Earth"
